WORTHING WEST BRANCH NEWSLETTER Autumn 2007

The Committee took a short rest during August and have now reconvened full of life and energy. It is encouraging for us to start by welcoming the twenty new Members recruited following our last leafleting drive.

The major political story of the moment is, of course, the refusal of Gordon Brown to call a General Election. If he had done so it would have been very difficult for us to support a candidate. However, we would have done it, in order to give all our Members and Supporters the chance to vote UKIP.

We can now take longer over choosing a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate. (We have to call them that for legal reasons, they become candidates when formerly adopted when an Election has been called.)

If anybody is interested in becoming a PPC please get in touch with one of the Committee members or Steve Harris at the Regional Office. Steve can let you know what exactly is required in order to stand.

There will be Council elections in Worthing next May as usual and again, if anyone is interested in standing, please let us know. Help with leaflets and filling in the necessary forms will be provided by the local Branch.

UKIP Conference in London: Once again this was a very enjoyable and interesting experience, well organised, with some excellent speakers. The first major item was that Martha Andreason, the former EU Accountant who was sacked for whistle-blowing the state of EU accounts, has agreed to become the Treasurer for UKIP. No doubt, there will be a full report in "Independence", but there were two other items which I found particularly disturbing. The first was spoken about by Lord Pearson of Rannoch who is now a member of UKIP and sits in the House of Lords. He said that anyone with an EU pension could lose it, if they spoke against the EU. There are some of these EU pensioners currently sitting in the House of Lords and when they are reviewing EU legislation they do not have to declare an interest. It should be noted that the vast percentage of EU Legislation (at least 70% of our laws ) is not even looked at and the government never changes the legislation anyway.

The second item was in a speech by Torquil Dick-Erikson about the European gendarmerie force. Apparently, we could in future see these riot police from other countries on our streets. They are not police in the sense that our police are. They are military police and their methods are totally unacceptable to us in Britain.

Leafleting: Although we will not be leafleting for a General Election, we do have about 10,000 leaflets for distribution. Fortunately, there is no hurry to get them out, but we feel that now is a good time to be putting them through people's letter boxes. We would be pleased to hear from anybody who can help, particularly from members who could do Rustington and Ferring.

War Memorial: Many of our Members and supporters either fought, or had members of their family who fought, in the last World War. For this reason, we have decided that we will again be represented at the Worthing War Memorial on November 11th. Phil Ruddock, our Chairman, will attend and place the wreath on our behalf.

East Worthing and Shoreham: You may remember that we were involved in helping East Worthing and Shoreham Branch to reorganise, following the departure of their Chairman to France. A Branch Meeting was held and a new Chairman appointed. Hopefully, our assistance will no longer be required, though we look forward to co-operating with them in matters such as Public Meetings.

We look forward to hearing from you with offers of help for leafleting and potential candidates in the Council and the eventual General Election. We would also be delighted to see you at the Christmas Fund Raising get Together on 1st December, which Ron and Jenny Brooks have kindly agreed to host.

WORTHING WEST BRANCH NEWSLETTER Summer 2007
Website: www.ukipworthingwest.co.uk

There are two major items for this News Letter. Firstly, the Local Elections and secondly, the new arrangements concerning the constituency of East Worthing and Shoreham, to whom we are also sending this edition of the News Letter.

Local Elections: The most successful of our candidates was Clive Maltby, who is now on the Parish Council for East Preston. We congratulate Clive and wish him well in his endeavours. The other results were as follows:

Castle Ward, Chris Chatfield, 204 votes, 9.15%,
Central Ward, Christopher Woodward, 99 votes, 5%,
Goring Ward, Richard Bater, 323 votes, 14%,
Heene Ward, Stuart Field, 173 votes, 9%,
Marine Ward, Phil Ruddock, 171 votes, 7%,
Salvington Ward, Ron Brooks, 364, 15%,
Tarring Ward, Martin McGinlay, 144 votes 7%,
Rustington West, Janet Penn, 659 votes, 25.9%,
East Preston and Kingston, Clive Maltby, 438 votes, 17.17%

Castle Ward was a two seat ward, Rustington West and East Preston were three seat wards. Although we sprang no surprises, it was encouraging that we were able to increase the number of candidates standing to nine and able to provide a leaflet for six. We gave everybody in our part of Worthing, East Preston and Rustington West the chance to vote UKIP. Our ambition has to be to cover the whole constituency at future Local Elections as well as General and European Elections.

To date we have increased our membership by twelve and it may be more when the responses to the leaflets have been dealt with at Regional Office.

Nationally, the story was similar, UKIP won five seats, two in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, as well as 20 Parish Council Seats. The total UKIP vote was over 200,000, which was more than double our previous record.

East Worthing and Shoreham: Unfortunately, Richard Jelf, the chairman of East Worthing and Shoreham has relocated his business to France and the Branch has had a period of inactivity. Before he left we had already agreed to cover East Worthing and Shoreham with our News Letter, which we now do and to offer assistance, should it be required, to ensure the future of the Branch.

Plans are now in hand to hold an AGM. This will be attended by Committee Members from Worthing West, who will discuss with the Members of East Worthing and Shoreham Branch the way forward if a new Chairman cannot be found.

Future Plans: The Committee is now making plans for the Branch up to Christmas. It has been suggested that we should organise some coach trips. Destinations put forward so far are Chartwell, the Submarine Museum and HMS Victory in Portsmouth and Denby's, an English Vinyard near Dorking. Another possibility is a coach to the Annual Party Conference to be held in London in October.

If you are interested in these ideas, or if you have any other suggestions for fund raising or other events to raise our profile, please contact one of the Committee members.

Thanks from Phil: A message from our Chairman, Phil Ruddock

The Council elections for 2007 are over, the dust has settled and it's time to take stock and review how we did. It's true we have not made the breakthrough, that will take time, but we have made significant progress. In 2006 we polled 1168 votes. This year we polled 2555 votes. Last year we fielded four candidates, this year we fielded nine.

We beat one independent and five Labour candidates in the process. We should take heart from this. Our political opponents know we are snapping at their heels.

May I take this opportunity to thank those candidates who flew the flag for UKIP, all those who helped with leafleting and supported us in other ways. Lastly, of course, those 2555 intelligent, politically astute, patriotic people who voted for us!

Here's a thought. Wouldn't it be great if we could double our Branch Membership in the next few months, well with this News Letter is a UKIP Membership Form. We all know like minded friends, neighbours, or relatives. Let's sign up at least one each. This will dramatically increase our Membership, and, as the Branch gets the first years subscription, increase our fighting fund for the battles ahead.

Finally, to all our UKIP friends in East Worthing and Shoreham, we have included you in our distribution of this News Letter as we thought you may be interested in our Election results.

Be assured of our support, if needed, for any future endeavours you have planned.

Best Wishes

Phil Ruddock

WORTHING WEST BRANCH NEWSLETTER
Spring 2007

This has been a very busy time for the Branch. Not only have we held our AGM, but we have also made plans to field ten candidates in the forthcoming Local Elections. This will give most of our Members the chance to vote UKIP.

AGM

The AGM was held on Saturday, 10th February 2007 at Field Place, Worthing. It was attended by 35 people, some of whom were from other Branches, invited to hear Adrian Lithgow speak. This also gave us the opportunity to meet with Members outside our group with a view to future cooperation.

Phil Ruddock opened proceedings with a brief report on the years activities, which included a display at the Hobbies and Leisure Exhibition, as well as supporting candidates in Local Elections in Worthing and Rustington.

Our Treasurer, Ron Brooks reported that although our current balance looked healthy at over £1,000, the Local Elections would be expensive and the need to raise funds was still essential.

The reports were then followed by elections for the Committee. Phil Ruddock was again elected Chairman, Ron Brooks continues as Treasurer and Jenny Brooks takes on the role of Secretary. Other Committee Members will be Phil Skinner, Jim Driscoll, Pam Campbell, Richard Bater and Janet Penn.

The formalities over the Meeting was then addressed by Steve Harris, South East Regional Organiser and Adrian Lithgow, Head of Media for UKIP and editor of our magazine "Independence".

Steve urged more people to stand in the Local Elections and announced that there would be 500,000 leaflets delivered to the office in Lyminster for distribution and people would be required to help with this.

Adrian spoke about the unfortunate irony of the gap between what people purported to want, ( a free country) and how they vote and how difficult it is to get our message through. He also announced that UKIP is to have a new Youth Section. Mention was then made of a possible image change, but more market research needs to be done on this. Items for reconsideration would be colours used and the logo.

The collection raised £137, which easily covered all expenses, such as the hire of the hall.

Local Elections

Our candidate list has now been finalised and if all goes well the following will be standing in the Local Elections to held on 3rd May 2007:

Ron Brooks - Salvington
Richard Bater - Goring
Janet Penn - Rustington West
Clive Maltby - East Preston and Kingston
Nigel Hall and Chris Chatfield - Castle
Martin McGinley - Tarring
Phil Ruddock - Marine
Stuart Field - Heene
Chris Woodward - Central

There are no elections in Durrington or Northbrook wards this year. In order to cut the expense not all candidates will have an election leaflet, however, we will try to leaflet all areas with the leaflet provided by UKIP.

Postal Votes

If you intend applying for a postal vote you should do so before 18th April, which is the last day for applications. If you live in Worthing you should ring Worthing Borough Council tel. no.01903 239999. If you live in Ferring, East Preston or Rustington you should ring Arun District Council tel. no. 01903 737500.

Hold Your Nerve

There have been some malicious attacks on the Party in the last few weeks. These are akin to the attacks on the Conservatives before the 1997 General Election and are politically motivated. Remember that we are the only Party that is totally opposed to the EU and our demise will play into the hands of the EU supporters. We must ride out the storm.

Galileo and Road Pricing

I am sure that you have all heard of the Galileo Satellite Project, which the EU is trying to put into place. This project is now late and in the meantime the Chinese have got in on the act, as have the Russians. Galileo needs funds to keep it going and it seems that those funds will be raised by the road pricing scheme, which our government is so keen on, despite much opposition. The internet petition describes the road pricing system as sinister, because it will mean that the Government will know where each individual is at any given time, so it is not only about revenue raising.

Keeping In Touch

If you are on the internet and can receive E-Mail you might like to receive more news from UKIP, such as when one of our MEPs will be on television or the radio. If this the case you should contact Steve Harris our Regional Organiser at the Lyminster office, tel. no. 01903 885573.

Ron and Jenny's B B Q

Ron and Jenny Brooks have very kindly offered to arrange a thank you B B Q for all Local Election candidates and helpers. This will be held on Saturday, 12th May at 12.30 at Ron and Jenny's home in High Salvington, 10 Broadview Gardens. Whilst no charge will be made, donations will be gratefully accepted.

Please let Ron and Jenny know if you are coming, as they will need numbers for catering purposes. Their tel. no. is 262910.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY
WORTHING WEST BRANCH NEWSLETTER WINTER 2007

I was heartened to read in the New Year’s Day edition of the Daily Telegraph that the big question now, is not who will be next to join the Euro, but who will be the first to leave. Let us hope that 2007 is the year when it happens.

I was also encouraged by reports that the majority of French people, asked in a recent referendum, said that they wanted the Franc back.

AGM: The Branch AGM will be held: Saturday, 10th February 2007 at 2.30 Venue: The Goring Room Field Place, (Off The Boulevard) Worthing

The Speaker will be Adrian Lithgow, who stood in the last General Election for Bognor and Littlehampton. Adrian is the Head of Media for the UK Independence Party. He was a journalist for over twenty years, including being Political Editor of the Mail on Sunday. He will be speaking about the latest developments in the Party and specifically about Media relations.

Nominations for Officers and Members for the Committee should be sent in, but nominations will be received on the day.

We would be delighted to see as many of you as possible. As well as being an opportunity to find out the latest news from the Party, there will be a chance to speak to members of the committee over tea/coffee and biscuits. We are always interested to hear Members ideas and opinions.

Nigel and Trixie Hall have opened their award winning garden to the Branch for the past three years. This has been a major source of fund raising for us. The photograph shows Members at the 2006 Garden Party enjoying a chat after lunch. A reminder of hot, colourful summer days in these times of dark, grey winter skies.

Representation in the House of Lords: It was announced by UKIP on 9th January 2007 that a UKIP group has now been formed in the House of Lords. Lord Pearson of Rannoch and Lord Willoughby de Broke have both joined the U K Independence Party. They were both Members of the Conservative Party, but have sat as independent Conservative Lords since helping UKIP in the European elections. Furthermore, it is reported in the Daily Telegraph that Tim Congdon, a leading Thatcherite economist, is joining the Party. He is leaving the Conservative because he feels that David Cameron’s ideas on the Economy and Europe are wrong.

Leafleting: The leafleting we did in the Autumn, as part of an exercise which all South East Branches took part, proved successful. Finances have been found to extend its scope and will be starting again in February. If you would be willing to help with leafleting please let us know.

Local Elections: We now have six volunteers to stand in the May Local Elections. We could still do with more, particularly in Rustington, East Preston and Ferring. If you would be willing to put your name forward please let us know.

Post Offices (with thanks to Christopher Woodward): Many Members will have heard in the news the talks about Post Office closures. The fact that has been largely neglected by the media is that post office closures are happening because of laws coming from the EU.

Article 88 of the Amsterdam Treaty demands that the government seeks permission from the EU Commission to decide what state aid for postal services is allowed, and EU Directive 2002/39/EC states that the size of the postal market reserved for national monopoly must be reduced, and that the government seeks permission before any state aid is granted.

As a result of this, in 2003 the government signed away the Royal Mail’s ability to control its financial affairs and a deal was made, with the government allowed to grant £150m to the post office each year for three years. However, the cost required to run the postal service is £208m a year, which means that there is a £58m deficit each year. After three years the Government does not have permission to increase the grant. As a result the debt is increasing and it will only get worse as inflation rises. At the same time as this, EU Directive 97/67/EC allows the privately run German Post Office to operate in the UK, and also imposes the new regulations on sizing and weights of post. As a result the Royal Mail is unable to afford to deliver many packages that it could before, driving the delivery of larger items into the hands of the German post office.

The result of the EU directives is that the private contractors will be able to cherry pick the best routes, with rural post offices being axed.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER WORTHING WEST BRANCH

Autumn 2006

I expect that you all know by now that Nigel Farage has been elected as our new Leader. As a result of this the Party should be more dynamic and ideas and policies are already being put forward. The main one to emerge so far, is our policy to bring back selection in Secondary Schools. This would mean the return of Grammar and Technical Schools.

Local Plans

The Committee has now met twice since the August break and have put together a Plan for the forthcoming year. The main item being our commitment to supporting candidates in the Local Elections to be held in May 2007.

If anyone is prepared to stand as a candidate please get in touch with our Chairman, Phil Ruddock, Tel No 535363.

Help will be provided with filling in all the necessary forms and leafleting.

Our other scheme is a letter, which we will be sending out to local businesses, pointing out what the EU is costing them and asking for their support in our fight against the EU. We are targeting small, owner run businesses and if anybody can supply names and addresses we would be pleased to hear from you.

We will also be leafleting. The South East Region has produced 60,000 leaflets and we have agreed to take 1,000.

Cost of the EU

Gerrard Batten, UKIP MEP for London, has calculated how much Membership of the EU has cost us. He has worked out that, including both direct and indirect costs, by 2007 Membership will have cost £100,000 per minute. The indirect costs include such things the Common Agricultural Policy, Fishing Policies and red tape.

Brussels

Other horrors awaiting us from the EU include the loss of the right to issue visas for immigrants from outside the EU and the entry of Romania and Bulgaria into the EU in January 2007.

Meanwhile, our MEPs are still doing their best to resist the encroachment on our sovereignty. Roger Knapman, who sits on the Civil Liberties and Justice Committee will be challenging the Tampere agreement in Strasbourg. This is an agreement to consider majority votong on Civil Liberties and Justice Affairs. It is feared that this could lead to the end of Habeas Corpus, trial by jury and “innocent until proven guilty”. Jeffery Titford also spoke out against the folly of the monthly move to Strasbourg. In the same speech he also described the EU as a “gigantic deception perpetrated against the people of Europe” and as a “dire threat to our future peace and liberty”. And so say all of us!

Events held by other Branches Occasionally, we are invited to events organised by other Branches, such as Public Meetings or social/fund raising functions. It is not possible to let everybody know about these because of the expense and frequently, shortness of notice, if you would like me to let you know about these please get in touch.

One of these events was a Public Meeting held in Bramber by the Arundel and South Downs Branch, which was addressed by David Campbell-Bannerman, the Party Chairman. This was a useful opportunity to hear him speak and ask questions about the Party generally.

Press Secretary

Christopher Woodward, who has been our very capable Press Secretary has resigned as he feels he no longer has the time to devote to our Committee. We would like to thank him for his efforts and are pleased that he will continue as Webmaster and give us his support in other ways.

AGM

The Branch AGM will be held in February 2007 and all details will be announced in the next News Letter. However, there is a current vacancy for a Minutes Secretary as Jenny Brooks has agreed to be our Press Secretary until the AGM. If another Member would be prepared to stand in as Minutes Secretary until then we would be delighted to welcome you.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

Summer 2006

President Jim Collins

We have been very busy again. This time supporting candidates in the Local Elections and having a stall in the Hobbies and Leisure Exhibition.

We had four candidates in the Local Elections, one in a by-election in Rustington, held on April 20th and three in Worthing Borough Elections, held on 4th May. It was decided, for financial and man power reasons, to only leaflet in Rustington and Goring. The results proved that a leaflet makes a considerable difference to the outcome of the election and we would like to field more candidates supported by a leaflet next year. This will of course, depend on the amount of help forthcoming from Members.

The results were, Rustington West Ward, where Janet Penn stood, 277 votes, which was 15.9%. In Worthing Borough, Richard Bater in Goring, 372 votes, which was 14%, Christopher Woodward in Tarring got 180 votes and beat the Labour candidate. Phil Ruddock, in Marine, got 166 votes.

We would like to thank everybody who helped at the Hobbies and Leisure Exhibition and everybody who leafleted for the Local Elections, particularly the Members from Littlehampton, without whom we could not have managed.

10th Anniversary

As reported in our last News Letter the Branch is celebrating its' tenth anniversary this year. Trixie and Nigel Hall have again agreed to hold a Garden Party in their award winning garden. The entry fee will be £5 and will include a ploughman's lunch, strawberries and cream. The date will be Saturday, 15th July 2006, time 12 o'clock. Trixie and Nigel's address is 6 Plantation Rise, Worthing, Tel No 262206. They will need to know how many to cater for, so please either 'phone them or complete the Booking Form at the end of this News Letter. Payment can be made either by cheque or cash, either in advance or on the day.

Trixie and Nigel have requested that all cars be parked in adjoining roads, wherever possible. There is a twitten from Copthorne Hill as well as parking in The Plantation.

Membership

Although we are one of the strongest Branches in the country, with 117 Members, we still need more people, particularly active Members, who can help with leafleting and fund raising. A Membership Form is included with this News Letter, so please make every effort to recruit at least one new Member, fit or not. If you need more Membership Forms, I will be only too pleased to supply them. New Members do not have to live in this area, all are welcome. Completed forms, together with money (cheques made payable to UKIP) should be sent to our Treasurer, Ron Brooks, at 10 Broadview Gardens, High Salvington, Worthing, West Sussex, BN13 3DZ.

Thanks

We would like to thank all the Members/Supporters who sent in stamps and donations towards the cost of the News Letter. Unfortunately, the amount received so far will not cover the expenses for four News Letters. If you have not yet contributed we would still like to hear from you.

Brussels

It is not possible, in this News Letter, to cover all that our MEPs do in Brussels, but I thought that you would like to hear about the "Battle for Democracy Bus". The EU has commissioned a bus to tour all the EU countries in an effort to win over hearts and minds, following the defeat of the Constitution. This bus will be shadowed by the "Battle for Democracy Bus", which will put the other side of the argument!

U K Independence Party News Letter

Worthing West Branch

Spring 2006

AGM:

The AGM was held on Saturday, 11th February 2006, in the Chichester Room, Field Place at 2.30 p m.

Phil Ruddock, our Chairman, gave a brief report of the activities for the previous year, which were mainly aimed at fund raising. He thanked Ron and Jenny Brooks for the Coffee Mornings and Ploughman's Lunch, which they kindly organised for us at their home and Trixie and Nigel Hall for opening their award winning gardens to Members. Together with the £500, which came from saving our deposit at the General Election, Ron Brooks, our Treasurer, was able to report a balance of £1023,74 as at 31st December 2005.

The General Election was held last May and Phil thanked everybody who helped with leafleting and the five members who stood in the county council elections held on the same day. He also thanked Tim Cross who was our candidate.

Other activities undertaken were a Public Meeting held in Rustington in October, attended by over one hundred people, at which Nigel Farage was the main speaker. Ron Woods represented us at the War Memorial on Remembrance Day.

The Committee was then re-elected without any changes from last year.

Phil Ruddock is the Chairman, Ron Brooks, the Treasurer, Jenny Brooks, the Minutes Secretary and Christopher Woodward, Janet Penn, Phil Skinner, Richard Bater and Pam Campbell make up the rest of the team.

After the formalities Bob Lomas from the Magna Carta Society treated us to a thought provoking talk. He emphasised, vehemently, his conviction of collusion and treachery practiced by successive governments in their sustained efforts to hand over our sovereignty and birthright to a combined German/Franco alliance.

10th Anniversary

The Branch will be ten years old in October. To celebrate this Trixie and Nigel Hall have again offered to host a Garden Party. This time there will be a Ploughman's Lunch and strawberries and cream as well as the opportunity to see their superb garden. The date will be Saturday, 15th July 2006 and the entry fee will be £5.00 (to include food etc.) There will be a booking form with the next News Letter, but please note this in your diaries now.

Stamps

Our main expense between elections is the News Letter, so although we are better off than in past years, it would help enormously if Members/ Supporters could contribute a book of stamps or small donation towards this cost. A few News Letters are delivered by hand and if anyone could help with this please let me know. Contributions should be sent to me at the address shown below. Cheques should be made payable to UKIP.

Hobbies and Leisure Exhibition

This will be held in the Assembly Hall, Worthing on Saturday, 11th March. We will be having a stall and if anybody is able to help please let me know. Three of the committee will be away, so we are a bit thin on the ground.

Local Elections

There will be Council Elections in Worthing in May and we hope to put forward candidates. It is our intention to produce leaflets for our candidates, so we would like to hear from Members who are prepared to leaflet, or who wish to contribute ideas.

Brussels

The regular letters from Brussels sent out by David Lott are very interesting, even if the contents do raise the blood pressure! It is now possible to receive these, even if you do not have E_Mail. Details can be obtained by ringing 0800 0727730.

Mick and Janet went to Brussels

Mick Penn was lucky enough to win a trip for two to Brussels to visit the EU Parliament as guests of Nigel Farage MEP. We listened to debates about Foreign Affairs and Transport and saw the voting. Space precludes a full report, but the most telling thing that happened while we were there, was when Jeffery Titford MEP spoke in the Parliament and had his microphone turned off, because he dared to mention the words "Fraud and Corruption",

We were also able to attend a reception for the inauguration of the Brussels Branch of UKIP!

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

Winter 2006

I hope you all enjoyed Christmas and wish you all a Happy New Year.

Since the last News Letter the committee has been busy and with the help of some of our Members and Supporters, have organised several events, including our forthcoming AGM.

AGM

Last year's AGM was poorly attended, due to the appalling weather on the day it was held. By the way of an experiment and in the hope of a better attendance, this year's AGM will be held on a Saturday afternoon. We have also invited Bob Lomas from the Magna Carta Society to be our Speaker. I understand that he is a good orator and can be heard loud and clear.

Date:Saturday 11th February 2006

Time: 2.30 pm
Venue: Chichester Room
Field Place
(Off The Boulevard)
Durrington Speaker:Bob Lomas

Petition

A Few brave Members put up a stand in Montague Street and obtained signatures for the Petition calling on the Government to hold a Referendum on our continuing Membership of the EU.

If you have started a petition sheet and cannot fill it up, please send it to me and we will try to complete it.

Public Meeting

This was held on 14th October 2005 in the Village Hall in Rustington and was attended by over 100 people. Our main speaker was Nigel Farage who said that the best people to govern the British are the British people themselves. We were fooled into thinking that, the EEC the British public voted for was only a trading arrangement, but it was always intended that it would be a full grown Super State. He also pointed out that 70% of our laws now come from Brussels. On the Constitution he said that many of the young people in France were totally against it, but the Euro- federalists had no intention of taking notice of the "No" vote. Already they are pressing ahead with some of the Constitution provisions such as Military command and Border Control. The Meeting was then followed by a UKIP West Sussex County Meeting chaired by Steve Harris, our Regional Organiser. The intention being to form a County Committee, which is felt to be necessary, now that the Party is larger.

Remembrance Day

The Branch was represented by Ron Woods, our first chairman, who served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. A card accompanied the wreath with the words: "In grateful remembrance of those who gave their all to keep these islands free from foreign domination, we salute you and vow to continue the fight".

Coffee Morning

Once again Ron and Jenny Brooks entertained us in their home. Mince pies, cake, coffee and mulled wine were all greatly appreciated by those who attended. A sum of £74 was added to the Branch funds.

Invitations to this type of event are sent to Members/Supporters who we feel are likely to attend, as this saves money on stamps etc. If you have not been invited and would like to come along , please let me know.

Brussels Report

These are issued by David Lott by E_Mail and give accounts of what our MEPs are doing in Brussels. It was decided to do this as we get so little coverage in the media. If you would like to receive these reports please contact Phil Ruddock Tel. No. 535363.

Recent reports have high lighted the way in which the European Parliament ignores its own rules when it suits them and that the auditors have refused to sign off the accounts for the 11th year running.

Some other little gems are:

Further attempts to create one legal system in the EU, which will mean that we lose control of prosecution decisions and the ability to set penalties.

The introduction of a European Tax instead of the current bargaining between countries.

Efforts to do away with the Red Ensign.

Thank You

Finally, on behalf the Committee, I would like to thank everybody who has leafleted, helped with fund raising and organised the events described in this News Letter.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

Autumn 2005

Despite the heat, the Committee has been busy, mostly planning for the future. Members have been thinking up ways of raising money and of promoting the Party. Phil Ruddock has already started the fund Raising effort with a table at a Car Boot sale and Ron and Jenny Brooks very kindly put on an excellent Ploughman's Lunch. We would like to thank them for all their hard work.

Public Meeting

Our major event for the autumn is a Public Meeting, to be held on October 14th at 7.30 in Rustington Memorial Hall in the Woodlands Centre, Woodlands Avenue, Rustington. (Generally known locally as the Village Hall)

Nigel Farage will be speaking and he will be launching a nationwide petition calling on the Government not to sign any more Treaties with the EU without a Referendum. The Hall holds 200 people so we are asking all Members/Supporters to come along and swell the crowd. Nigel is an excellent speaker and it is a great opportunity to hear him. Friends and family will be welcome. Help with leafleting will, of course, be welcomed.

There is plenty of car parking outside the Hall. If you need directions please let me know.

Local Elections

We feel that in order to promote the Party locally we need to support candidates in the Local Elections. These are held annually in Worthing and every four years in Arun District.

By way of preparation, we are putting together a list of issues which are of local interest and concern. If you have any ideas about this please contact Phil Ruddock, Tel No. 535363.

We should also like to hear from you if you would be prepared to stand.

Littlehampton Branch

Bognor Regis constituency brings together two towns, Bognor and Littlehampton, which for geographic reasons makes it easier for them to operate with two Committees, one for Bognor and one for Littlehampton.

We have been liaising with the Littlehampton group for some time now, particularly during the European Elections. They have supported our Fund raising events and we try to support theirs. They have arranged a Harvest Supper/Musical Evening, which will be held 24th September at 7.0'clock at 40 Old Kent Road, Littlehampton. Entrance will be £5.00. If you would like to go, please contact Mary Lees Tel. No. 713851 for details.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

May 2005

President: Jim Collins

The really good News from the results of the recent General Election was that we, in Worthing West, saved our deposit. Our vote was 2,374, which was 5.3%.

Those of us who have been in the Party since the early days have always known that it would be a long haul, so this something of a milestone on our road to success. It also means that with approximately £700 in the bank, it will be a long time before we have to ask you for a donation again!

Thank You Very Much

We have been asked by Roger Knapman, our Leader, to pass on his thanks to all of you who did so much to help. The Committee and Tim Cross, our candidate, would also like to thank you. We could not have fielded a candidate without the leafleting done by Members and supporters and, of course, the generous donations.

Nationally, the Party received 610,000 votes and fielded 497 candidates. This compares well with the 106,001 votes for 194 candidates in 1997 and 390,910 votes for 434 candidates in 2001.

Local Elections

The decision to nominate candidates in the County Council Elections for the first time was taken in an effort to promote the Party. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds it was not possible to produce leaflets, but we felt that it was right that as many of our voters as possible should have the chance to vote UKIP on both voting papers.

Candidates stood in the following divisions:

East Preston and Ferring ( Phil Skinner 348 votes), Goring and Northbrook , a two seat division ( Richard Bater 628 votes and Christopher Woodward 515 votes), Rustington ( Janet Penn 413 votes) and Worthing West (Phil Ruddock 266 votes)

Although we cannot prove it, we felt that having County Council candidates did help to increase our vote to the all important 5% needed to save our deposit. It was also a useful exercise in the art of form filling! The experience we gained this time should be very helpful in future.

Garden Party

Nigel and Trixie Hall have very kindly agreed to open their award winning garden to us again. The details are as follows:

Where

6 Plantation Rise
Worthing

When

7.30 Pm 17th June 2005

The entrance price will be £2.00, which will include a glass of wine or something non-alcoholic.

There will be a raffle.

We look forward to seeing you there, an opportunity to celebrate before we get back to the hard graft of educating the public in the devious ways of the EU.

Remember, it took the Labour Party 43 years to get an MP!

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWS LETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

April 2005

It now look certain that a General election will be held on May 5th. In fact. by the time you receive this it may well have been announced.

We have tried to raise the necessary funds since last June, when the European Elections were held, but only have £700 in the bank. We need at least £1,500 to cover all our costs. Unfortunately, this means we have to ask you, the Membership, to put your hands in your pocket yet again. We know that many have given to Party funds, but details of such donations are not revealed to Local Branches. Cheques should made out to "UKIP" and either sent to our Treasurer, Ron Brooks, 10 Broadview Gardens, High Salvington, Worthing or to me.

AGM

Due to lack of space the last News Letter did not give the names of the Committee Members elected at the AGM. Phil Ruddock continues as our Chairman and I am still the Vice-Chairman, Membership Secretary and News Letter writer. We welcome a new Treasurer, Ron Brooks and a new Minutes Secretary, Jenny Brooks. Christopher Woodward is our Press Officer and Webmaster. Pam Campbell deals with Social Events and will be our Election Agent and Richard Bater deals with leafleting. Pauline Ruddock is our "Minister without Portfolio".

Peter Blackman retired as Treasurer and we would all like to thank him for his contribution, particularly in the early days when we were few and far between.

Coffee Morning

The Coffee Morning was a great success, with about 30 Members attending and a sum of £124 raised. We would like to thank Ron and Jenny Brooks for opening their home to us and for all their hard work. (My husband is still raving about their home made cakes.) I would also like to thank them for doing the last News Letter, when I had shingles.

Leafleting

We would still like to hear from anybody who is prepared to leaflet. If you live in Rustington, please contact me, otherwise 'phone Phil Ruddock on 535363.

Dinner There are still some spaces for the St George's Day Dinner 23rd April. Friends and family are welcome, but it would probably be best if they shared our views. If you are interested please ring Pam Campbell on 235713.

Posters

If you have space for a Poster please let me know and I will arrange for one to be delivered to you.

I am sorry to have to ask you for money again. I now that under this Government, we are all financially worse off, but so close to the General Election, it is now the only thing we can do.

UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY NEWSLETTER
WORTHING WEST BRANCH

March 2005

The Branch AGM was held on 21st February at The Goring Room, Field Place, Durrington. A total - including committee and speakers - of 17 attended. This was a disappointing attendance, possibly, partly due to a light fall of snow and a warning only to travel if necessary. Unfortunately a lot did not think it was necessary! God Save Britain! Both the Chairman and Treasurer of the Worthing East Branch honoured us with their company.

Tim Cross, having been formally adopted as our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) then gave an impassioned address outlining what he considered his essential strategy for the forthcoming General Election. One of his main subjects being that of immigration.
Steve Harris - The SE Regional Organiser - spoke on general strategy for the General Election especially with reference to the generous donation by Alun Bown of £10,000 to each of the regions which will be used mainly to provide posters, bill boards and other advertising materials. He stated that in 1997 our share of the vote was 1% and at the last European Election we received 16% of the vote. A concerted push and we should get at least one MP and, if twelve, would really electrify British Politics! Although the defection by Robert Kilroy Silk hurt us, in fact only about 200 defected and they included a few who tended to be a 'pain in the butt'!! The media now tend to view his outbursts with ridicule. By contract, our steady leader Roger Knapman is steering us towards election success.
With only 5 hardy people attending, other than committee members and speakers - from a membership, in West Worthing, in excess of 170 is a little pitiful. This year is arguably the last chance to save our beloved country from annihilation so - 'all hands to the pumps' otherwise we could sink. In spike of the small turnout the evening realized &50.00 in donations.

Leafleting

We continue leafleting, and there will be several different leaflets to deliver before the Election, which is anticipated as 5th May, so it must be a sustained effort. Once again if you are able to give a hand - even a small one - we really could use your help and it would make all the difference to the outcome. All leaflets are of a topic which concerns the residents of the Worthing area. Anyone able to help, especially in the Ferring - East Preston Area, please contact Richard Bater - details on back page. 9 Million leaflets for the European Elections were distributed nationwide last time - which is more than the other three parties managed together and contributed to our successes.

Coffee Morning

In our efforts to raise money, as we urgently need to topple this government, or should it be mis-government, we need a fighting fund of at least £1600 to cover the constituency's election expenses. Towards this end, Jenny and Ron Brooks have kindly agreed to host a Coffee Morning. Anybody else able and willing to do likewise, please contact Phil Ruddock - details on back page

Venue: 10 Broadview Gardens, High Salvington, Worthing

Date: Saturday 12th March 2005
Time: 10:30 -12:30

Entry Fee (to include cup of coffee etc) £1.00

There will be a raffle and a bring and Buy. Contributions to both will be gratefully accepted. Suggested items are home made cakes, books and jigsaws for the bring and buy and the usual chocolates or bottles of wine etc. for the raffle.

St George's Day Lunch

St George's Day falls on a Saturday this year and a lunch has been arranged, by Pam Campbell, to commemorate England's Saint Day. It is a two course lunch with coffee and mints for £15.50 per person, and we hope to have a speaker or two, details to follow. There are still vacancies for another 25 dinners, which, to make it worth wile, we really need to fill. From experience the food is excellent.

Venue: The Spotted Cow, 1 High Street, Angmering
Date: 23rd April 2005
Time: 12:00 for 13:00
Cost: £15.50 per person

To Book please contact Pam Campbell on 01903 235713

Please make a note in your diary for both events and we look forward to seeing you all.

URGENT APPEAL
Leafleting

Our constituency covers most of Worthing - Ferring and East Preston.
This is the area to which we must deliver leaflets.

Although no definite date has yet been set for the General Election we must work to the widely held date of 5th May. We have already started delivering the fist leaflet and there is another one due shortly, all of which we want to have delivered by the end of April. With this election we have a very good chance of getting a number of Members into Parliament - but we desperately need help in spreading the word by leafleting.

Time is short - your country needs a change of Government to stop this slide into oblivion - Can you help? - We need feet on the ground now, it is felt that this is our last chance, fir under another Labour - Liberal Democrat or possibly Conservative Government, Britain is likely to be dismembered and buried beneath Brussels and the EU. Whilst Scotland - Wales & Northern Ireland still show on maps, England - yes England - appears to vanish, becoming mere Regions of Europe - that is according to the maps we have seen. A good result by the UK Independence Party could put a stop to this process and hopefully start to return Britain to the British once again.

Your Country Needs You Now

We realise that some are unable to help, but, we do have over 170 members in this constituency. Even just doing your street will help.
So Please - if you can help telephone Richard Bater - Leafleting Organiser on 01903 248225 between 2-5 PM daily or anytime Monday or Phil Ruddock - Constituency Chairman on 01903 535363

We hope to have some leaflets available for collection at the AGM, unless we have managed to deliver all our allotment!

Winter 2004 Part 1

Once again I start the News Letter with a big thank you. This time to all of you who responded to my request for stamps or money for stamps. I now have enough for the next two News Letters, so again, thank you.

Branch Meeting

At the Branch Meeting held 7th October Phil Ruddock, our Chairman, started by giving us a report on the Party conference held in Bristol, 2nd and 3rd October.

The conference was chaired by Petrina Holdsworth, who in case you do not know, is now the Party Chairman. Following our successes in the European Elections and in Hartlepool, the conference theme was a "Celebration for Independence and Democracy". The conference was attended by 1200 members.

The longer I listened to Phil, the more I wondered if he had been at the same conference that I had seen snippets about on the television (particularly the BBC) and in the news papers.

He spoke of excellent speakers making serious points about the way our country is being run. In particular, Alan Eastwood, a former Chairman of the Police Federation, who said that political correctness was damaging the ability of the police to do their job. He said the UKIP policy is to put more police on the beat and to let them get on with it, without interference from the government.

I am sure that there will be a report on the Conference in the next "Independence," but the following are a few points mentioned by Phil which I thought you would like to know about.

1 Portugal voted "No" to Regionalisation, but it was imposed upon them.

2 Jean Monnet, one of the EU founders said "never announce procedures openly, always proceed with stealth".

3 Two years ago, only20% of the electorate had heard of us, now it is 80%.

4 Sir Richard Body, who was a Conservative, has joined the Party, so too has Chris Lees, who was a Lib- Dem councillor. He was arrested on drug charges while on holiday in Spain, held for 50 weeks without trial and finally released without an explanation or compensation. This, not surprisingly, brought about a "Road to Damascus" conversion to UKIP.

It sounded to me as though it had been an excellent Conference and I wish that I had been there.

Benefactor

Alan Bown has been one of our benefactors for some time now. He has preferred to remain anonymous in so far as the law allows and unlike some, does not court publicity. He has said that he will make good the short fall in funds caused by the departure of Paul Sykes.

Tim Cross

Phil was pleased to announce that Tim Cross will again, be our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate. The Committee will be meeting with him to discuss strategy and to complete the necessary procedures when Tim has been approved by the Party.

Have a look at our Website!

The Branch has really moved with the times and now has a Website. Our Press Secretary, Christopher Woodward, has set up a Website for us, which he announced and gave a brief introduction to at the Branch Meeting.

The website address is www.ukipworthingwest.co.uk and Christopher is our Webmaster.

We are all very grateful to Christopher for all his hard work and hope that all members, who have access, will get in the habit of looking for new announcements in this way.

President

It was also announced at the Meeting that the Committee had decided that it would be nice to have a President. It was felt that the best person to fill this post was the founder of the Branch, Jim Collins. Jim has been asked and said that he would be delighted to accept.

New Treasurer

Peter Blackman has done a super job, being our treasurer, as well as keeping the books for the Region. He now feels that it is time to hand over the reigns and we are looking for someone to take his place. Ideally the new Treasurer would work as his understudy until the AGM in February. If you have the relevant experience and would be prepared to take the job on, please let us know.

Fund Raising

We are aware that the Party makes frequent financial appeals to Members. So, the committee has decided to make more effort to hold fund-raising activities. In order to do this we need help. If you would be prepared to give us some of your time for this enterprise, please let us know. The members of the existing Committee already devote much time to UKIP and running the Branch and need more members to lighten the load. Help with transport could probably be found if that is a problem. So, just give us a ring, we will be delighted to hear from you.

Remember, the next General Election may only be a few months away.

Winter 2004 Part 2

Fund Raising

At the Committee Meeting held 21st October, the matter of fund raising was again discussed.

Several ideas were put forward, such as coffee mornings, raffles at social events and all the usual things. It was also suggested that we have a stall in Worthing at the Market, where we could hand out leaflets as well as selling second hand books etc. Several of the committee have books about the EU (by Christopher Booker, Richard North and others), which could be loaned out for a small fee.

There was no shortage of ideas. The problem is finding Members/Supporters to run it all. Nobody has come forward to take charge, but it was felt that there is sufficient interest to go ahead with some of the suggestions. We are looking for volunteers to give us some of their time. The organisation will be shared out.

Would you be prepared to have a Coffee Morning in your home?

Could you help out at a stall in Worthing?

Would you help out at a Jumble Sale or do a Garage Sale. (We have plenty to sell in Phil's garage!)

Could you make tea at a Meeting or Social occasion?

If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions please let me know

The General Election could be as soon as next May, so it is vital that we start putting money in the coffers now.

Treasurer

We are very grateful to Ron Brooks for volunteering to be our new Treasurer. He will work with Peter until the AGM, when Peter will retire and, unless anybody wants to fight him for it, he will then take over.

Civil Contingencies Bill

Just to remind us all of what it is we are fighting for, I enclose a photocopy of an E-Mail from John Knotts, UKIP Stourbridge and West Midlands about the Civil Contingencies Bill. This could bring in draconian measures, which are alien to our way of life. Please read it and then pass it on for others to study.

Autumn 2004 Newsletter

I start this News Letter by thanking Nigel and Trixie Hall for all their hard work in organising the Garden Party held at the end of June. They managed to raise a welcome £128.00 for Branch funds. I would also like to congratulate them on winning the Daily Mail Garden competition. Those of us who saw the Garden are not surprised, it is superb.

Meeting

We now have to hold our AGM in February, because of the Government regulations on financial returns for Political Parties, so we have decided to hold a Branch Meeting in October. This will follow the Party Conference and will include a report on the Conference, as well as details of the plans being made by the Branch for the forthcoming year, which may well be a General Election year.

It will also be an opportunity for Members to make any suggestions or comments that they may wish to contribute.

The Meeting will be held at:

The Chichester Room
Field Place
Worthing (Off The Boulevard)

Thursday, 7th October 2004

7.30 PM

Steve Harris, our Regional Organiser, is currently in Hartlepool, helping the local branch with the by-Election. If he is back in time we will be inviting him to come along to help answer your questions.

Jonathan Aitken

You may be interested to know that Jonathan Aitken, who is a Party Member, will be speaking at the Worthing Tabernacle, 64 Chapel Road, Worthing, on Thursday, 11th November 2004, at 7.30. The title of his talk will be "From Power to Prison to Peace".

Money

We donated nearly all our Branch Funds to the Party, in order to help fight the European Elections. This was because all the expenses for the Election had to be accounted for in one return. This was well worth while as Branch Membership has increased and we now have 185 members. This is very pleasing, but as the Branch has no income from Members subscriptions, we are finding it difficult to fund the News Letter. (I have just spent £40.00 on stamps.)

We are asking Members to help with this problem by doing one of the following:

1 Send us a book of second class stamps.

2 Give us their E-Mail address, so that we can send it electronically.

3 Make a small donation to Branch Funds, preferably by cheque, made payable to "U K Independence Party".

In the past a few have been delivered by hand, but this is no longer possible.

We feel that it is vital to keep Members informed about Branch News, the more often the better.

We look forward to seeing you at the Branch Meeting, but if you cannot make it, there will of course, be a report in the next News Letter.
